Thousands of anti-World Cup Brazilians took to the streets in a number of cities to protest against the cost to host the games. The protesters said that money could have been spent on schools and hospitals.
To prevent any distruption of the games, the Brazilian authorities mobilised thousands of policemen to keep protesters away from stadiums. Brazil was under further pressure as it failed to complete some infrastructure projects in the run up to the World Cup.
There is anger against the FIFA as well. The world's football governing body came under harsh criticism over a series of corruption cases. The decision by its president Sepp Blatter to run for another term only made matters worse. He stands accused by many, some within the FIFA itself, of not doing enough to prevent the scandals.
